Monmouth County Police Academy in Forefront for Training High School Students as Public Safety Professionals

Freehold: It was a proud day for parents and leaders in law enforcement as twelve students of the Monmouth County Vocational School District’s Academy of Law and Public Safety, graduated and became Special Law Enforcement Officers, SLEOs, as part of a new program that is being offered.

 “These dedicated young men and women are our future leaders in law enforcement,” said Sheriff Shaun Golden, who was the keynote speakers at graduation. “Having a SLEO class as part of the curriculum, is a great privilege and the finest way for students to embark on careers as public safety professionals.”

The 34^th Basic Course for Class I Special Law Enforcement Officers was a partnership with the Monmouth County Police Academy and the Academy of Law and Public Safety. The class ran from June 5 through June 15 and consisted of 54 hours of training. To qualify for the program seniors must be 18 years of age, have gone through the interview process, applied for jobs at local police departments and taken in depth law enforcement classes. SLEOs are utilized mostly during the summer season to enforce the law and maintain public safety. 

Class topics and hands on exercises included rules and regulations, morals and ethics, cultural diversity, autism awareness, disorderly persons offenses, motor vehicle traffic laws, enforcement and stops, cultural diversity, handling disturbances, disputes and domestic violence situations,  stops, arrests and use of force, riot and crowd control, legal requirements and responsibilities of police during emergency and pursuit, handcuffing, baton techniques and communications using flashlight, whistles and hand signals. 

 “This was a tremendous accomplishment for the students. I commend them for a job well done and thank Sheriff Golden, Police Academy Director Darryl Breckenridge and Administrative Training Officer John Fay for their determination and commitment to implementing this class,” said Joseph Diver, Principal, Academy of Law and Public Safety. “The students were trained and taught by exceptional instructors of the Monmouth County Police Academy and the Academy of Law and Public Safety. As a result, I have no doubt they will become dedicated members of law enforcement.”
